Day 10

Today was a more stressful day than usual . I saw two people today who I could not do anything to help. The first is a 16 year old kid who got a big bite on his ankle which led to osteomyelitis of his entire ankle and tibia ( we sent him to get x rays to confirm this). His best option is probably amputation. We are currently looking for a reliable doctor who can help us out. The second case was similar except the person was 22 and had had an ankle surgery that never healed. He has a large open wound on his shin and I can see his bone. 
I did see a few wounds in between which were healing so that was good to see. My last patient of the day was interesting case. She clearly has some psychiatric condition, and has been to the hospital to get some” foolish” pills. I nor she has any idea what these pills are. I saw her yesterday for machete wounds. Today I wanted to do more of a medical check. Her BP was crazy high (240/120), she had a UTI and all kinds of infections in her wounds. If I were at home I would send her out to an acute care hospital, but alas that does not happen here. I have her coming back today so hopefully she is doing better!

First day of clinic! What a day. Controlled chaos with over 130 patients seen by 30 PTs in a 6-7 hour period. To give you a better picture of the clinic I have attached a picture at the bottom of it before the patients came in. It is about 800 square feet with 14 beds. There are 30 therapists, 30 interpreters  and more than 30 patients and heir family members milling around the clinic at any given time.... all these people while we are doing gait training, family training for transfers , bracing trials and orthopedic interventions. That is what I mean by controlled chaos. Although I am constantly bumping into people and saying" excuse me" I would not have it any other way. If I have a moment of down time I look to the therapist next to me and 100 percent of the time they are performing an intervention I have not seen before. Day 15

Travel day! We woke up at 3:30 and were on the road by 4:45 am...... so early! It is a good thing we start early through because traffic starts to pick up around 6. We did. It break down at all and we had the fancy new bus! About a half hour in we got a road block. Some truck had pulled off to the side of the road and the. A car got stuck. Our bus could not get by. A few guys got out and moved the car and after a few scary moment where I was convinced we were going off a cliff we made the turn and were on our way. I slept 90% of the way( surprise surprise) and when I woke up we were 75% of the way there. This was a much easier ride than the way to PDP! We arrived at our hotel and immediately I put in my bathing suit and hopped into the pool. After two weeks of hard work it felt great to be splashing around a pool at a fancy hotel. Weekend days 7 and 8

This weekend was a nice relaxing weekend. After the week 1 crew left the people who were staying two weeks headed over to Tortuga for some relaxing weekend fun. We took a speed boat over ( super fast!) and then zipped up to the top of the mountains in a tap tap. We unpacked all our stuff and then went on a hike. The hike was really cool. We walked down to some caves and saw all kinds of cool formations and then we walked around the island. It was nice and toasty while we were walking and it felt great to get in real exercise ! I then proceeded to nap for a few hours. After we all napped we hung out on the porch for a few hours and ate dinner . One of the girls brought a hammock so I hung out in that for a bit.  Sunday morning we headed back down the island, took a boat back to the main island , picked up the new crew and then headed back to Tortuga ( the other side) for some fun in the sun at the beach!
